What Are Dentures?
Dentures are removable dental appliances that replace missing teeth and the surrounding gum tissue. They are custom-made to fit comfortably and mimic the appearance of your natural teeth. In many cases, well-made dentures can even enhance the look of your smile and facial profile, restoring volume to sunken cheeks and lips.
There are two main types of dentures:
- Complete Dentures – Used when all of the teeth in an upper or lower arch are missing.
- Partial Dentures – Used when some natural teeth remain, helping to fill gaps and prevent shifting of remaining teeth.
Complete Dentures
Complete dentures are ideal for patients who have lost
all teeth in either the upper or lower arch (or both). There are two main kinds of complete dentures:
Conventional Dentures
- Placed after your gums have fully healed from tooth extractions (typically 4–6 weeks).
- Offer the most stable fit and appearance after your mouth has adjusted.
- You may go without teeth during the healing period before placement.
Immediate Dentures
- Made in advance and placed immediately after extractions.
- Allow you to maintain your smile and chewing ability while your gums heal.
- May require adjustments as your tissues shrink and change shape during healing.
Partial Dentures
Partial dentures are recommended when you still have some healthy, natural teeth. These appliances fill in the gaps created by missing teeth and are supported by a metal or acrylic framework that anchors around your remaining teeth.
Benefits of partial dentures include:
- Restoring your ability to chew and speak clearly
- Preventing adjacent teeth from shifting
- Improving facial aesthetics and bite alignment
With regular care, both partial and complete dentures are durable and long-lasting, providing many years of functional support.
Why Might You Need Dentures?
Dentures can be an excellent solution for a wide range of dental needs, including:
- Complete tooth loss in one or both arches
- Multiple missing teeth in a row or spread across the arch
- Improving your facial appearance and smile symmetry
- Restoring chewing efficiency and aiding digestion
- Enhancing speech impacted by missing teeth
- Providing support to prevent further oral complications like shifting teeth or jawbone loss
Dr. Sitkovetskiy will perform a detailed evaluation to determine which type of denture is right for your smile.
